Perhaps no greater honor exists for a high school basketball player than earning All-State honors. Both the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News have been honoring ballplayers in this way dating back to the early part of the 20th Century.
As you can imagine it takes quite a bit of research to compile an exhaustive list of Michigan All-State selections. Bill Hoover has done the lion’s share of this work and in so doing he’s made a few requests: the All-State section of the DetroitPSLBasketball.com web site will also includes All-State selections from Highland Park, even when the Polar Bears/Parkers were not in the PSL; players from Detroit East Catholic, Grosse Pointe North, Grosse Pointe South, and other non-PSL notables, i.e. guys who were VERY notable in amateur athletics and/or who made it to bigtime professional sports. Since Hoover, a lifelong Grosse Pointe resident and former East Catholic assistant coach, has spent 15 years reading microfilm free of charge we’ll grant him his requests.
